PROJECT

TASK 3: TYPE DESIGN AND COMMUNICATION
INSTRUCTION

In the last task, we were ask to create our own fonts with using Adobe Illustrator and install it in FrontLab 7 applications.

First and foremost, Mr. Vinod asked us to prepare four different types of stationery and one special tools to do write some simple lines and some letters using different objects but with consistent direction to analyze our desired shapes as well as our own styles.

The reason to build up a strong foundation before going to create our own work is to understand the anatomy of the letters and make sure that every single alphabet look like a group of family once we design.
  • Guideline for this task:
    • Artboard: 1000pt x 1000pt
    • Ascender Height
    • Baseline: 0
    • Capital Height
    • Descender Line
    • Median Line
FONT FOCUS: a e t k g r i y m p n ! # , . ( capital or not, whatever ;)

1. Research
From my acknowledgement of myself and my original handwriting style, I would prefer more on capital letters and something simplify, round, and thick like bold type of "Comfortaa or "Futura".

To begin with my sketches, I started to look for some typefaces ideas on Pinterest (my old friend) and google fonts (which recommended from Mr. Vinod) to get more idea which similar to my preferences.

Figure1.1 Preference One

This is one of my favorite style of typefaces named "Burgess - Bold". It should the thickness, firm, and easy-going flavor from the first.

2. Exploration
To begin with the five tools, I tried to draw all the letters in uppercase and lowercase  to see which texture and pen I would prefer more.

Figure2.0 Font Exploring Sketch One

From my primary sketch, I tried round tip, brush pen, board marker, Artline brush type and a permanent marker with 2-6mm. I personally like the simplify and cute outcome of the round tip shows as well as the difference strokes that the board marker presented.

Later, I explore more on the board marker and round tip and tried to make it as a combination with my drawing on the graph paper.

3. Digitalize
The most difficult part is to put whatever I draw of the letters with the flow, pressure and speed of my hand need to be transport on Adobe Illustrator and make it significant as well as more controlled.

Figure3.0 Digitalize Font Draft

Start from this moment, I realize that I do not want to continue with the selection of typefaces because I think I couldn't enhance it much and most of the peers in our class are also working on something that is bold, huge, and attractive.

Therefore, I started to browse more on Pinterest and found out one of the designer's Instagram profile named @barrettrmdesign, who have activity upload her ideas and designed typefaces on feed.

Now, back to the research stage again!

1.1 Research
Looking through my handwritings and drawings while exploring my other favorite typeface, I wanted to try something different from what I used to show. Then, I decided to go for something that is thin but strong, detailed but still simple

Figure1.1.0 Types of References On Instagram

From the references while scrolling through her feed, I realize this talented designer has producing a lot of typefaces that is wavy and playing with different strokes to perform a more controlled font that you can imagine how she write using her hand, the pressure, the flow between words and letters, also the impact of the content of what she trying to show.

However, I did not want my font to look like flexible, connecting with each other, yet clean and simple.

Figure1.1.3 Sans Serif Didot Typeface on Pinterest

In the nutshell, I decided to explore more on "Serif and San Serif" Font type which is modern, friendly, and minimal.

2.1 Sketches and Digitalize
Going through weeks of classes of Mr. Vinod keep reminding us to start with drawing with lines, circle, slant line and refined it in order to keep all the letters look like a same family and reasonable.
Figure2.1.0 Primary Shape for My Font

Therefore, I decided to use rectangular shape tools to help me with the vertical, horizontal strokes with different weights. Besides, I used the anchor adjustment pen to work with the circular strokes.

During the process, I tried to copy paste the original strokes and applies into the beginning steps of building the letters and it is easier to make adjustments while also maintaining the origin of the letters.

Other than letters, I also tried to work on the period, comma, exclamation point, pound point from the instructions that Mr. Vinod posted on our Facebook group: https://www.instagram.com/p/CRjdPtSjz5K/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

4. Develop into "FontLab"
Following the instructions from Mr. Vinod tutorial videos on YouTube, I installed my designed font into the application and start to adjust it with kerning between each character.

First of all, I start with adjusting the space in their respective boxes and make sure they are all on the baseline and start to do the kerning for every alphabet that I created using keyboard arrows.

5. Poster Design
After downloaded my font, I started to use ChatGPT to look for some ideas about what words or sentences I can generate my poster. Other than that, I also explore some words from the progress works from our classmate.

Guideline for the Poster:
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • A4, black and white only
  • Font Size must be SAME
  • Helvetica or Universe Font, 12point, 14 leading (for creator's name)
  • MUST have impact
Figure5.0 First Draft

I wanted it to be simple and look minimalize so I decided to arrange the words for the top and bottom of the page instead of filling up the whole capacity. Subsequently, the meaning of the poster is to get a contrast on the black ink and grey ink. So, instead of having all black, I tried to represent that if there is grey in my art, then it will be great.

Yet, Mr. Vinod said the sentence is not suitable for this piece and it do not includes all the letters that I had generated. Moreover, he also commented that it look too elegant and careful, not wild enough. As a result, I need to brainwash about the content of my poster and the impact of it.

I started to survey what are the remaining words that can put in my poster and I thought of this poster is to help me in promoting my fonts then I reform another sentence.

FEEDBACK

Week 8
  • General Feedback:
    • Moving on to assignment three, while sketching the idea of fonts with tools, remember to stay on one angle for the respective lines. Start on how you hold the pen and end with it. Mr. Vinod provide advice to let us keep on practicing in writing to get familiar of each letters.
  • Specific Feedback:
    • On the posting for our five options wording, I like to have a thicker stroke but with a smoother outline. Therefore, Mr. Vinod suggested me to explore more with my draft style number 3 and 5 to practice in order to get everything equal to look like a "family" before we digitalize it.
Week 9
  • General Feedback:
    • Keep everything on the baseline while writing the letters and the result do not need to be similar from our sketch.
Week 10
  • General Feedback:
    • Digitalize letters need to look controlled and complete. Need to be consistent with the same angle for vertical, horizontal, two version of curve, diagonal line in our letters. For example the vertical line in "E" can apply to other alphabet.
    • Also, try to research and survey the similar fonts on "Google Fonts" to get the idea of making our own letters. Yet, do not follow directly of the reference, only learn from the findings.
    • The size for full stop and comma is different. Study the symbols before begin to analyze it.
  • Specific Feedback
    • All letters must end at the same point on the baseline.
Week 11
  • General Feedback
    • Complete the letters by modifying each fundamental shape again to make sure it is consistence and redesign the symbols because it has it guideline.
Week 12
  • General Feedback:
    • We do not have class next week and remember to includes everything in the portfolio.
    • Composition with balance alignment, but not equal so it got the contrast and dimension. Everything related will act as a whole, SIZE can be the grouping element to make connection.
  • Specific Feedback:
    • The meaning of the sentence in the poster need to rethink with the elegant feel of my typeface, it is too "pretty" can have more impact and bigger.

REFLECTIONS

Experiences
In burning all the midnights oil of working on the final task, I think I am more familiar with the understanding of Typography which perfectly ends at creating our own font. Our first task is to sketch our own writing and I already be excited and terrified of every steps I took, will it be difficult to perform the next step. All in all, the learning process is enjoyable, but I still forgot to save some of the working process, and evidence of performing my every single steps which makes me suffer in remaking the progress work.

Observations
While working on this interesting project, it allows me to explore more of designer and typographer who not only publish their work on Pinterest, but on their personal blog. Therefore, I find it amusing is because you not only refer to their art but their personalities and work-life. Other than that, website like "Google Font" is also an useful platform that involve a huge range of typeface for us to research more and increase our visuals. Not only the advice from the internet, I also gain a lot of knowledge and unique information from our classmates' design. Through the sharing work and reviewing other's work process, it helps me with building up my motivation and communication.

Findings
Although we are making our own desired font, we do have some guideline to follow. Like touching the baseline, setting the cap height, ascender & descender, also utilize the kerning tools and more. By working on the digitalize journey, I found out that I am more familiar to Adobe Software compare to the beginning of this semester which I am still afraid of dragging my progress and could not keep up. Furthermore, I also acknowledged that the lower-position object gives reader an impression of being small sized than the upper-position when both of the object are in same size which it represent some optical issues and this applies in how we promote our poster to make it impactful.

FURTHER READING

1. "Typography design 101: a guide to rules and terms": Blog from Laara Bonn
As mentioned, I do more research on the professional's people. I discover that she shared a lot of the anatomy, illusions, and proper usage of the letters and symbols.

  • The letters B, P and R are sister shapes, but doesn’t mean they have the same proportions.
  • The bowl of the R needs to be slightly thinner so that when we connect the leg to it and the upper bowl of the B needs to be smaller than the bottom one, so that the letter appears more stable.

I read this while refining my letters and this info really helps me in observing my designed letters.

2. "Briar Neue - Regular" Typeface: One of the designs from this artist
This new typeface released on May 31, 2022. It provide the reasons and the process of digitalize it.
Figure7.1 Screenshot of the explanation of letter "B"
  • It forms with the movements, rhythms, and reverberations of nature.
  • The designer give a form of ground up and implement the idea of blooming.
Nature can be another element for us to reimaged and redesigned, connecting with it will boost up the meaning of our outcomes.
